50 Pesos Peso (Issued 1975-1981)
Chile’s 1975 currency reform marked a definitive break from the preceding escudo era, with the newly introduced peso designed to project stability and national pride through imagery deeply rooted in the country’s republican identity and naval heritage. The figures and scenes chosen for these notes were intended to reassure a population navigating a period of significant economic restructuring, anchoring the new currency in familiar historical symbols. The 50 pesos denomination draws on both the political legacy of a key nineteenth-century statesman and the proud maritime history of Chilean independence. Together, these elements made the note immediately recognisable and symbolically resonant for those who handled it during its years of circulation.
On the front, the dominant feature is an engraved oval portrait, positioned to the right of centre, depicting Aníbal Pinto Garmendia, President of Chile from 1876 to 1881, rendered in fine intaglio line work with considerable tonal depth. Pinto is shown from the chest upwards, wearing a dark jacket with a white shirt and bow tie, his bearded face turned slightly to face the viewer, with careful cross-hatching used to model his features with precision. The portrait is framed within a finely detailed oval vignette surrounded by intricate guilloché scrollwork. To the left of centre sits a large, empty oval formed by layered guilloché patterns, likely serving as a watermark zone. Between these two oval elements, a central design features a five-pointed star motif accompanied by laurel branch detailing, rendered in green and blue. At the top of the note, the issuing authority is printed in bold serif lettering reading “BANCO CENTRAL DE CHILE”, flanked on both sides by the serial number “2071201” in red, with the prefix “A 8” appearing beneath the left serial number and repeated in the lower right corner. The denomination “CINCUENTA PESOS” is printed in large serif capitals at the centre, with the year “1976” appearing just below, and the numeral “50” appearing prominently in the upper left and lower right corners in blue. Two facsimile signatures of bank officials are printed across the lower central area, accompanied by their respective titles, and below these appears the printer’s imprint “CASA DE MONEDA DE CHILE”. The overall colour palette is a cool blue-green, with the guilloché backgrounds rendered in layered tones of pale green and steel blue.
The reverse is executed in a consistent deep blue palette and is dominated by a large, finely engraved maritime scene occupying the left and central portions of the note. A tall-masted sailing vessel is shown in full sail, its rigging and sails rendered with meticulous engraving detail, with the hull visible below the waterline suggestion and the sea conveyed through fine horizontal line work. At least two further sailing ships are visible in the background at varying distances, adding depth and perspective to the composition. A caption in small text beneath the central scene appears to reference the vessel’s name, associated with Chilean naval history, though the lettering is small and partially rendered. To the far left, an elaborate circular rosette of guilloché work is visible, incorporating radiating petal-like forms in blue. On the right side of the note, a large plain oval is formed by fine guilloché border work, left clear and serving as a watermark or security zone. The denomination “50” appears in the upper left corner and lower right, with “BANCO CENTRAL DE CHILE” printed in bold serif type at the upper right, and “CINCUENTA PESOS” in serif capitals along the lower edge. The overall engraving style on the reverse is consistent with the high-quality intaglio printing associated with the Casa de Moneda de Chile.
