The one jiao (one-tenth of a yuan) belongs to the fifth series of renminbi coinage issued by the People’s Bank of China from 1999. Struck in a lightweight aluminium alloy, it is a small, thin, silvery coin with a plain edge, designed to circulate as everyday small change.

On the obverse, the value side, a large numeral “1” fills the field alongside the Latin lettering “YI JIAO” and the Chinese characters for the People’s Bank of China, with the character 角 (jiao) at the right and the date “1999” below.

On the reverse is an orchid spray in bloom, encircled by the bank’s name in pinyin, “ZHONGGUO RENMIN YINHANG” (People’s Bank of China), following the upper edge.
