1 Chinese Yuan Banknote (1980 – 1996)
£0.065707
1 CNY = £0.065707
The 1 Chinese Yuan banknote issued between 1980 and 1996 forms part of the Fourth Series of Renminbi, introduced by the People’s Bank of China as part of a major redesign aimed at modernising China’s circulating currency. These notes were widely used during a period of rapid economic and social change in China and are now regarded as older or withdrawn designs outside mainland China.
The obverse of the banknote features two female figures wearing traditional ethnic dress, representing China’s diverse nationalities. This design was intended to symbolise unity, cultural heritage, and harmony among China’s many ethnic groups. The denomination “1 Yuan” is clearly displayed alongside intricate ornamental patterns and multilingual text reflecting China’s official recognition of minority languages.
On the reverse, the banknote depicts a detailed engraving of the Great Wall of China, one of the country’s most iconic historical landmarks. The Great Wall imagery reinforces themes of strength, endurance, and national identity, which were central to the design philosophy of the Fourth Series. The background includes complex geometric patterns designed to deter counterfeiting.
Printed in predominantly red and pink tones, the note incorporates security features typical of the era, including detailed line engraving, serial numbers, and fine background patterns. While these banknotes were once common in everyday circulation, they have since been replaced by newer series with enhanced security features and updated designs.
Outside China, earlier renminbi notes from this period are often no longer accepted by banks, making specialist exchange services essential for individuals and organisations holding older Chinese currency.
