1 Chinese Yuan Banknote (Mao)
£0.090339
1 CNY = £0.090339
The Chinese yuan, officially known as the renminbi, has been issued by the People’s Bank of China in several series and designs. This 1 Chinese Yuan banknote featuring Mao Zedong forms part of the later 20th-century issues and represents one of the most recognisable low-denomination notes of modern China.
This banknote is printed in muted green and beige tones on high-quality paper and incorporates a range of security features typical of its era. These include fine line engraving, detailed background patterns, serial numbering, and tactile elements designed to reduce counterfeiting. While once widely used in everyday circulation across China, older 1 yuan note designs have since been replaced by newer issues and updated security standards.
The obverse of the banknote features a formal engraved portrait of Mao Zedong, the founding figure of the People’s Republic of China. Mao’s portrait appears prominently on many Chinese banknotes and is framed by intricate decorative patterns, with the denomination clearly displayed in both Arabic numerals and Chinese characters. Official issuing text from the People’s Bank of China appears above and around the portrait.
The reverse of the banknote shows a scenic landscape design, commonly associated with Chinese cultural heritage and natural beauty. The image depicts a tranquil water scene with traditional stone pagodas rising from the surface, symbolising harmony and longevity. This style of imagery is typical of Chinese currency design and contrasts with the formal political portrait on the front.
Although some older Chinese yuan banknotes may still be recognised domestically, many earlier series are no longer accepted outside China and are often treated as withdrawn or legacy notes by banks. This can make exchanging them difficult through high-street channels.
