1 Jiao Banknote China (1953)

The 1 Jiao banknote issued in 1953 forms part of the First Series of the Renminbi introduced by the People’s Republic of China following its establishment in 1949. These early banknotes were produced during a period of economic consolidation and currency reform, as China transitioned away from multiple regional currencies toward a unified national monetary system.

Issued by the People’s Bank of China, the 1953 1 Jiao note represents a fractional denomination intended for everyday transactions at a time when inflation and economic rebuilding shaped currency usage. While modest in face value, these notes are historically significant and are now considered withdrawn from circulation, having been replaced by later Renminbi series and modern coinage.

The design of the 1 Jiao banknote reflects the utilitarian and ideological themes of early Communist-era currency. The obverse features the national emblem of the People’s Republic of China, surrounded by ornate guilloché patterns and multilingual inscriptions intended to support use across China’s diverse regions. The denomination is clearly stated, reinforcing its role in daily commerce.

The reverse depicts industrial and agricultural imagery typical of the era, symbolising productivity, mechanisation, and national development. Such imagery was common on early Renminbi notes and was used to convey economic progress and collective effort during China’s formative post-revolution years.

Although the 1953 1 Jiao banknote is no longer legal tender in modern China and cannot be used in circulation, it remains exchangeable through specialist currency services. Many banks do not accept early Renminbi issues, particularly low-denomination notes from the 1950s, due to their withdrawn status and the need for authentication.
