1 Jiao China Military Payment Certificate (1965)

China issued Military Payment Certificates for internal military use, separate from everyday Renminbi circulation. This 1 Jiao (0.1 yuan) certificate from 1965 is a good example of that controlled system: it was designed for restricted use within military channels rather than for the general public, which is why it is commonly classed as non-circulating and effectively withdrawn for normal day-to-day spending.
The design is dominated by intricate guilloché patterns and fine line engraving in blue tones, intended to make the note difficult to copy while remaining easy to recognise. The obverse features large denomination markings (“0.1” and the Chinese character for jiao), framed by ornate borders, with additional wording that indicates it was not for open market circulation. These restrictions are a key reason why many banks and exchange services will not accept military certificates, even when they are genuine.
On the reverse, the certificate features a detailed steam locomotive scene, reflecting the era’s focus on industry, transport and infrastructure. The locomotive motif also fits the practical nature of these certificates, which supported controlled payments and purchasing in military contexts, including supply and logistics environments.
Because Military Payment Certificates were never intended for general circulation and were later replaced or removed from use, surviving examples are often treated as legacy items. Condition can vary widely, and authenticity checks are important, particularly where notes are older, unusual, or outside standard retail banking channels.
