The 10 Chinese Yuan banknote issued in 1965 forms part of China’s Third Series of Renminbi, a period marked by strong political symbolism and state-focused imagery. Issued by the People’s Bank of China, this series reflected the country’s socialist ideals during the mid-20th century and was widely circulated before later reforms modernised China’s currency system.
This banknote is now withdrawn from circulation and is no longer accepted in everyday transactions within China. However, it remains of interest to collectors and can still be exchanged through specialist currency exchange services that handle older and discontinued banknotes.
The obverse of the 10 Yuan 1965 banknote features a detailed engraved scene of Tiananmen Gate, an iconic national landmark representing political authority and the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The design is framed by ornate floral patterns and strong symmetrical borders, with the denomination clearly displayed in both Arabic numerals and Chinese characters.
The reverse side depicts a group of workers, soldiers, and citizens, symbolising unity, collective effort, and national progress. This imagery is characteristic of the era and was intended to convey strength, cooperation, and loyalty to the state. The engraving style is bold and highly detailed, with intricate line work typical of mid-century Chinese banknote production.
Printed using traditional intaglio techniques, the note features layered colours, fine guilloché patterns, and multilingual text reflecting China’s diverse regions. Despite lacking modern security features such as holograms or colour-shifting inks, the craftsmanship and historical context give this banknote enduring significance.
Although this series is no longer legal tender, it remains exchangeable as a withdrawn banknote, subject to condition and authentication checks.
