10 Chinese Yuan Banknote (1980 – 1996)

£0.657069

1 CNY = £0.065707

The 10 Chinese Yuan banknote issued between 1980 and 1996 forms part of the fourth series of Renminbi banknotes introduced by the People’s Bank of China during a period of economic reform and modernisation. These notes were widely used in everyday circulation across China before later series introduced enhanced security features and updated designs.

This denomination is printed in a combination of multicoloured inks on high-quality paper and reflects the artistic and cultural themes typical of Renminbi issues from this era. While these banknotes remain legal tender within China, earlier series such as this are increasingly treated as legacy or withdrawn designs outside the country and are no longer accepted by many banks internationally.

The obverse of the 10 Yuan banknote features portraits representing China’s ethnic diversity, a recurring theme across the 1980–1996 series. The figures are shown in traditional attire, symbolising unity and national identity. Chinese characters identifying the People’s Bank of China and the denomination are prominently displayed, along with intricate background patterns designed to deter counterfeiting.

The reverse of the banknote depicts a dramatic mountainous landscape, reflecting China’s natural geography and reinforcing themes of strength and endurance. The design is framed by decorative borders and denomination markings in both Chinese characters and Arabic numerals.

Although still recognised by the issuing authority, this series is no longer printed and is commonly classified as an older Renminbi design. As a result, specialist exchange services are often required for individuals or organisations looking to exchange these notes outside China.
