100 Chinese Yuan Banknote (1980 – 1996)

£6.570690

1 CNY = £0.065707

The 100 Chinese Yuan banknote issued between 1980 and 1996 forms part of China’s fourth series of Renminbi, produced by the People’s Bank of China during a period of significant economic reform and modernisation. This series is widely recognised for its strong political symbolism and detailed engraving, and it represents an important transitional era in modern Chinese currency history.

The obverse of the banknote features a distinctive multi-portrait design showing Mao Zedong alongside other key Chinese leaders, symbolising unity, continuity, and the collective leadership of the People’s Republic of China. The portraits are rendered in fine engraved detail, surrounded by complex geometric patterns and decorative elements designed to deter counterfeiting. The denomination is clearly displayed in both Arabic numerals and Chinese characters.

On the reverse, the banknote depicts a dramatic mountain landscape, reflecting China’s natural heritage and national identity. The design is printed in a predominantly blue and purple colour palette, with layered patterns, detailed line work, and subtle shading that were advanced security features at the time of issue. The year “1980” appears on the note, although production continued for several years and circulation spanned into the mid-1990s.

While these 100 Yuan banknotes were once widely used in everyday transactions within China, they are no longer issued and have been replaced by newer designs featuring enhanced security features. Outside China, earlier Renminbi notes such as this series are often treated as withdrawn or legacy currency and are not typically accepted by high-street banks.
