100 Chinese Yuan Banknote (Mao)

The 100 Chinese Yuan banknote is the highest-denomination note in regular circulation within the People’s Republic of China and forms part of the fifth series of the renminbi (RMB), first introduced in 1999. Issued by the People’s Bank of China, this banknote is widely used for everyday transactions as well as higher-value cash payments, both domestically and among travellers returning from China.
The obverse of the banknote features a detailed engraved portrait of Mao Zedong, the founding leader of the People’s Republic of China. Mao’s portrait is positioned slightly to the right and rendered using fine line engraving techniques designed to deter counterfeiting. Surrounding the portrait are complex background patterns, colour-shifting elements, and microprinting, all of which contribute to the note’s security. The denomination “100” is displayed prominently in Arabic numerals and Chinese characters, along with serial numbers and the official seal of the issuing authority.
The reverse of the 100 Yuan banknote depicts the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, a landmark building located on Tiananmen Square that serves as a symbol of the Chinese state and its legislative functions. The design incorporates layered colour tones, detailed architectural engraving, and large denomination numerals, giving the note a formal and distinctive appearance.
This series introduced a range of modern security features, including a watermark portrait, security thread, intaglio printing, and ultraviolet elements, reflecting China’s move towards internationally recognised banknote standards. As a current banknote, the 100 Yuan remains legal tender within China and is still actively issued, although older or worn notes can sometimes be difficult to exchange through high-street banks outside the country.
