2 Chinese Yuan Banknote (1953)

The 2 Chinese yuan banknote issued in 1953 forms part of the First Series of the Renminbi, introduced shortly after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China. These early notes were designed to stabilise the national currency system and replace a complex mix of regional and wartime currencies that had previously circulated across China.
This series is regarded as historically significant and is now fully withdrawn from circulation, having been replaced by later Renminbi series during currency reforms in the 1950s and 1960s. As a result, 1953-issued Chinese yuan banknotes are no longer accepted in everyday transactions or by banks, either within China or internationally.
The 2 yuan banknote is printed using detailed intaglio engraving and features multilingual text reflecting China’s ethnic and linguistic diversity at the time, including Chinese characters alongside minority scripts. The design is formal and symmetrical, consistent with early state-issued currency, and emphasises national unity and authority.
On the reverse, the banknote typically depicts a prominent Chinese landmark or landscape scene, symbolising national heritage, reconstruction, and progress in the early years of the People’s Republic. These pictorial elements, combined with ornate borders and traditional motifs, make the note visually distinctive compared to later, more modern Renminbi designs.
Because of their age, withdrawn status, and historical context, 1953 Chinese yuan banknotes are commonly encountered today as inherited items, collector holdings, or part of old savings discovered outside China. Their condition and authenticity are key factors in determining whether they can be exchanged.

If you are looking to exchange old or withdrawn Chinese banknotes, we provide a secure UK-based service specialising in historic Renminbi that is no longer in circulation. Many banks do not accept early Chinese currency, but we regularly handle withdrawn notes for individuals, charities, and organisations.
Due to the age and collectable nature of First Series Renminbi notes, additional authentication checks may be required, and processing times may be longer than standard banknotes. Acceptance is subject to verification, and payment is made once authenticity and condition have been confirmed.
For higher-value or historic currency exchanges, valid identification will be required in line with Anti-Money Laundering Regulations (AMLR).
