2 Chinese Yuan Banknote (1960)

£0.131414

1 CNY = £0.065707

The 2 Chinese Yuan banknote issued in 1960 forms part of the Third Series of Renminbi, a period that reflected China’s early industrial development and socialist themes. This series was introduced as part of a wider effort to stabilise the currency system and modernise banknote production following the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

On the front of the note is a detailed engraving depicting an industrial worker operating machinery, symbolising labour, productivity, and the country’s focus on manufacturing and technical progress during the early 1960s. The denomination is shown prominently in Chinese characters, along with the wording of the People’s Bank of China. The design uses intricate line work and muted green tones typical of the era, giving the note a distinctive historic appearance.

The reverse features an industrial landscape with factories and smokestacks, reinforcing the theme of national development and heavy industry. Decorative borders, floral elements, and symmetrical patterns frame the scene, while the year of issue, 1960, is clearly displayed. As with other notes from this series, security features are minimal by modern standards, relying mainly on detailed engraving and paper quality rather than advanced anti-counterfeiting technology.

Although once legal tender in everyday circulation, the 1960 series Chinese Yuan banknotes were withdrawn and replaced by later issues with updated designs and security features. Today, these notes are no longer accepted for circulation within China but remain of interest for collectors and can still be exchanged through specialist services.
