Chinese Renminbi banknotes have been issued in multiple series since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, including this 2 Fen banknote issued in 1953. This note forms part of the First Series of Renminbi, introduced during the early years of monetary reform following the establishment of the new Chinese state.
The 2 Fen denomination was intended for everyday low-value transactions and played an important role in China’s early planned economy. Notes from this period were printed using relatively simple security techniques compared with modern standards and are now classed as withdrawn historic currency, no longer accepted in circulation.
On the obverse of the banknote is the national emblem of the People’s Republic of China, surrounded by ornate geometric and floral engraving. The denomination is shown in Chinese characters, with multilingual text reflecting the linguistic diversity recognised at the time of issue.
The reverse of the banknote features an engraved illustration of a propeller aircraft, symbolising industrial development, transportation, and modernisation during the early 1950s. Decorative borders and patterned backgrounds frame the central image, with the denomination clearly displayed.
Today, 1953-series Fen banknotes are primarily of historical and numismatic interest. While they are no longer legal tender in China and are not accepted by banks, they remain collectible and exchangeable through specialist services.
