2 Jiao Banknote China (1953)

The Chinese 2 Jiao banknote issued in 1953 forms part of the First Series of the Renminbi, introduced shortly after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. These early banknotes were issued by the People’s Bank of China and reflect the country’s post-revolution economic reforms and transition to a unified national currency system.
This 2 Jiao note is printed primarily in muted green and brown tones on traditional paper stock and features multilingual text, including Chinese characters and minority scripts, reflecting China’s diverse population. Banknotes from the 1953 series are now withdrawn from circulation and no longer accepted for everyday use within China.
On the obverse of the banknote is the national emblem of the People’s Republic of China, surrounded by ornate engraved patterns and denomination markings. The year “1953” is clearly shown, identifying it as part of the earliest Renminbi issues.
The reverse of the banknote features an engraved illustration of a steam locomotive, symbolising industrial development, national reconstruction, and economic progress during the early years of the People’s Republic. Decorative borders, traditional motifs, and denomination characters complete the design.
Although these notes retain historical significance, they are no longer legal tender in circulation and are typically regarded as withdrawn or legacy currency. As a result, many banks will not accept them, particularly outside China. However, they remain of interest to collectors and can still be exchanged through specialist services.
