The 2 Yi Jiao banknote forms part of the fourth series of Chinese renminbi issued by the People’s Bank of China between 1980 and 1996. Yi Jiao is a subdivision of the yuan, with 10 jiao equal to one yuan, and these smaller-denomination notes were widely used for everyday transactions during a period of rapid economic change in China.

This series is characterised by intricate geometric patterns and multicolour printing, reflecting the design style of late-20th-century Chinese banknotes. The obverse typically features decorative motifs and the national emblem, alongside multilingual text representing China’s ethnic diversity. The reverse shows a portrait-style illustration of women in traditional dress, symbolising unity and regional heritage.
