The five fen coin was the largest of the aluminium fen coins issued by the People’s Bank of China. Struck in aluminium, it is a light, thin coin with a plain edge, once a common piece of everyday small change before the fen denominations faded from circulation.

On the obverse is the national emblem of the People’s Republic of China — Tiananmen Gate below five stars, surrounded by ears of grain and a cogwheel — with the country’s name in Chinese characters, “中华人民共和国” (People’s Republic of China), around the top.

On the reverse, the numeral “5” appears above the characters 伍分 (five fen), flanked by two sprigs of wheat, with the date “1986” beneath.
