5 Chinese Yuan Banknote (1956)

The 5 Chinese Yuan banknote issued in 1956 forms part of the Second Series of Renminbi, introduced by the People’s Bank of China to support economic reform and currency standardisation in the early years of the People’s Republic of China. This series replaced earlier 1953 designs and featured improved engraving quality, clearer denominations, and enhanced consistency across banknotes.

Printed in a predominantly red and brown colour palette, the 1956 5 Yuan banknote reflects the strong political and social themes of the period. Although denominated in yuan, this note is no longer in circulation and has been fully withdrawn from everyday use in China, making it a legacy banknote today.

The obverse of the banknote displays the national emblem of the People’s Republic of China at the top centre, surrounded by ornate guilloché patterns and multilingual text. The denomination is shown clearly in Chinese characters, with decorative framing that is characteristic of mid-20th-century Chinese banknote design.

The reverse features a detailed illustration of a mass gathering scene, symbolising unity, labour, and collective progress during the early socialist era. This imagery is typical of Renminbi issues from the 1950s, which frequently highlighted workers, farmers, and public participation as key national themes.

Due to its age and withdrawn status, the 1956 5 Yuan banknote is no longer accepted by banks or retailers and must be exchanged through specialist currency services.
