5 Chinese Yuan Banknote (1980 – 1996)

The 5 Chinese Yuan banknote issued between 1980 and 1996 forms part of the fourth series of Renminbi introduced by the People’s Bank of China. This series marked a major redesign of Chinese banknotes, incorporating improved printing techniques, enhanced durability, and more detailed artwork reflecting China’s cultural diversity and natural landscapes.
The obverse of the banknote features two figures in traditional ethnic dress, symbolising unity among China’s many nationalities. The portrait-style engraving is surrounded by intricate guilloché patterns and ornamental borders, with the denomination clearly displayed in both Chinese characters and Arabic numerals. The People’s Bank of China title appears prominently at the top of the note.
On the reverse, the banknote depicts a dramatic mountainous river landscape, a recurring theme in this Renminbi series. The detailed engraving highlights China’s vast and varied geography, framed by complex geometric designs and decorative motifs that are characteristic of banknotes from this period.
Although these 5 Yuan notes were widely circulated throughout China during the 1980s and 1990s, they have since been replaced by newer series with advanced security features. Older designs such as this are now increasingly treated as withdrawn or legacy notes outside China, and are often no longer accepted by high-street banks.
