5 Jiao Banknote China (1953)
£0.032853

The 5 Jiao banknote issued in 1953 forms part of the First Series of the Renminbi, introduced by the People’s Bank of China following the establishment of the People’s Republic of China. This series played a key role in stabilising the national currency system and supporting early economic reconstruction during the 1950s.
The 1953 5 Jiao note is printed in predominantly purple and reddish tones, with intricate ornamental borders and fine line engraving typical of early PRC banknote design. The obverse features the national emblem of the People’s Republic of China at the centre, surrounded by Chinese, minority-language, and decorative script, reflecting the multilingual and symbolic approach used in early Renminbi issues. The denomination is clearly displayed in both Arabic numerals and Chinese characters.
On the reverse, the banknote depicts a large hydroelectric dam in operation, symbolising industrial development, infrastructure expansion, and collective progress. This imagery was common across the first Renminbi series and was intended to promote themes of productivity, unity, and national rebuilding. The reverse design is framed by ornate patterns and includes the issue year “1953” in Chinese characters.
Although these banknotes were once legal tender, 1953 Renminbi issues have long since been withdrawn from circulation and are no longer accepted in everyday transactions, either within China or internationally. Today, they are primarily encountered as legacy currency held by collectors, families, or individuals who acquired them decades ago.
We specialise in handling withdrawn and historic Chinese banknotes and can assist with the exchange of genuine 1953 Renminbi notes, subject to condition and authentication checks.

Due to the age and collectable nature of early Chinese Renminbi notes, additional verification may be required. Rarer or higher-value banknotes may take longer than 5 days to process due to enhanced authenticity checks, ensuring security and compliance for all parties involved.
