5 Yi Jiao banknote China (1980 – 1996)

The 5 Yi Jiao banknote was issued by the People’s Bank of China as part of the fourth series of Renminbi banknotes, introduced in 1980 and used through to the mid-1990s. During this period, the Renminbi underwent significant design and security improvements, reflecting China’s economic reforms and increasing international engagement.

This denomination represents five jiao, equivalent to half of one yuan, and was commonly used in everyday transactions during the 1980s and early 1990s. Although it remained legal tender for many years, this series has since been withdrawn from circulation and replaced by newer designs with enhanced security features.

The obverse of the banknote features detailed engraved portraits of two women in traditional ethnic dress, symbolising unity among China’s ethnic groups. The design is rich in ornamental patterns, with the denomination clearly displayed in both Arabic numerals and Chinese characters. Fine line engraving and intricate geometric borders are characteristic of Renminbi notes from this era.

On the reverse, the banknote displays the national emblem of the People’s Republic of China, surrounded by decorative guilloché patterns and multilingual text. The layout reflects the formal and symmetrical design style used across the fourth series, with a strong emphasis on national symbolism and clarity of denomination.

While no longer issued or accepted in everyday circulation, 5 Yi Jiao banknotes from this period are still encountered outside China, particularly among travellers, collectors, and individuals holding older currency. Many banks no longer accept these withdrawn Renminbi notes, especially in smaller denominations.
