50 Chinese Yuan Banknote (1980 – 1996)

The 50 Chinese Yuan banknote issued between 1980 and 1996 forms part of China’s Fourth Series of Renminbi, a landmark issue that reflected the country’s economic reforms and modernisation during the late 20th century. These notes were widely used in everyday circulation for many years before being replaced by newer designs with enhanced security features.
Printed by the People’s Bank of China, this 50 Yuan banknote is larger and more detailed than lower denominations of the same period, making it one of the most recognisable notes of the Fourth Series. Although it was once widely circulated, it has since been withdrawn and is no longer accepted for everyday use in China.
On the obverse, the banknote features portraits of three figures representing different sectors of Chinese society, symbolising unity, progress, and collective development. The design is rendered in rich, multitone colours with intricate patterns and fine-line engraving, typical of Renminbi banknotes from this era. The denomination is clearly marked in both Arabic numerals and Chinese characters.
The reverse of the note depicts a dramatic natural landscape, widely associated with China’s iconic scenery and national heritage. This imagery was chosen to highlight the country’s natural strength and cultural identity, a recurring theme throughout the Fourth Series. Decorative borders, detailed background patterns, and prominent denomination markers frame the scene.
While these 50 Yuan notes remain legal tender in theory, they are no longer in active circulation and are often classed as withdrawn or legacy banknotes. As a result, many banks and exchange providers outside China will not accept them.
