The twenty-cent coin was among the larger denominations of the Republic of Cyprus’s decimal coinage. Struck in nickel-brass with a golden colour, it is a bold, round coin, used in everyday commerce until Cyprus adopted the euro in 2008.

On the obverse is the coat of arms of Cyprus — a shield showing a dove with an olive branch above the date “1960”, flanked by two olive branches — with the trilingual legend “CYPRUS · ΚΥΠΡΟΣ · KIBRIS” and the date “1990”.

On the reverse is the bearded head of the philosopher Zeno of Citium, the founder of Stoic philosophy who was born in the Cypriot city of Kition, facing left. The Greek inscription “ΖΗΝΩΝ Ο ΚΙΤΙΕΥΣ” (Zeno of Citium) runs at the left, with the numeral “20” to the right.
