The twenty cent coin was part of the Cypriot pound, the currency used until Cyprus adopted the euro in 2008; the pound was divided into one hundred cents. Struck in nickel-brass with a golden colour, it was a substantial everyday coin. The edge is smooth and the inscriptions appear in English, Greek and Turkish, reflecting the island’s communities.

On the obverse is the coat of arms of Cyprus, a shield showing a dove carrying an olive branch above the year “1960” and set within a wreath of olive and laurel. The country’s name is given around the rim as “CYPRUS · ΚΥΠΡΟΣ · KIBRIS” with the date “2001” at the foot.

On the reverse is the bearded head of Zeno of Citium, the Cypriot-born founder of Stoic philosophy, facing left, with his name in Greek “ΖΗΝΩΝ Ο ΚΙΤΙΕΥΣ” down the left side and a large numeral “20” at the lower right.
