About the Cyprus 5 Cent Coin

This coin features a gold-toned aluminium-bronze composition, giving it a distinctive appearance and a slightly heavier feel than lower denominations. The design is more expressive than the 1 cent coin, drawing directly on ancient Cypriot artefacts and motifs.

Obverse (Front)

The obverse features the national identity of Cyprus. At the centre is a shield bearing a dove with outstretched wings, symbolising peace. The dove is engraved with fine detail, with clearly defined wings, body contours, and feather lines.

Below the dove, the year “1960” is inscribed, marking Cyprus’ independence.

Surrounding the shield is a laurel wreath formed by two symmetrical branches that rise from the lower edge and curve upward. Each leaf is individually engraved, with fine خطوط adding texture and definition.

Encircling the outer edge is the inscription “CYPRUS • KYΠPOΣ • KIBRIS,” presented in English, Greek, and Turkish. The lettering is evenly spaced and follows the curvature of the coin.

At the bottom, the minting year “2004” is engraved, aligned centrally.

The overall composition is balanced and formal, emphasising national identity and unity.

Reverse

The reverse displays a stylised depiction of a mouflon, the native wild sheep of Cyprus, shown from the front. The animal’s head is centrally positioned, with large, curved horns extending outward in wide arcs on both sides.

The horns are engraved with smooth, flowing lines, creating a sense of movement and scale. The face is simplified but expressive, with clearly defined eyes, nose, and mouth.

Below the head, the numeral “5” is engraved, indicating the denomination. The number is centred and slightly rounded, with smooth surfaces.

Flanking the numeral on both sides are small plant motifs, possibly representing native flora. These are engraved with fine خطوط and curve gently outward, adding balance to the lower portion of the design.

The background field is smooth, allowing the central motif and denomination to stand out clearly.
