500 Korun Českých Czech Koruna (Issued 1993)

The dissolution of Czechoslovakia on 1 January 1993 created two independent successor states — the Czech Republic and Slovakia — each requiring its own sovereign currency almost overnight. The Czech National Bank (Česká Národní Banka) was established at the same moment as the new republic itself, and the urgent task of producing a distinct Czech monetary series fell to it immediately. The 500 Korun Českých note was among the first denominations issued under this inaugural series, bearing the year 1993 and representing one of the most significant moments in modern Central European monetary history. Its design drew on deep Czech cultural heritage to establish a confident national identity for the new currency.

On the front, the dominant feature is the engraved portrait of Božena Němcová, the celebrated nineteenth-century Czech author and national literary figure, whose name is printed in small capital lettering to the upper right of her likeness. The portrait is rendered in fine intaglio engraving, showing Němcová in three-quarter profile facing left, her hair drawn up and adorned with a small rose motif, wearing a drop earring and period dress with a lace-edged collar. The overall colour palette of the front is a warm rose-pink and deep brown, with the large numeral “500” printed in bold brown ink to the upper left. Centred across the note is the denomination text “PĚT SET KORUN ČESKÝCH” in bold serif lettering, and below it the issuing authority name “ČESKÁ NÁRODNÍ BANKA” is printed in clear, spaced capitals. A facsimile signature of the bank governor appears beneath the issuing bank name. To the left of centre, a large guilloché rose design in pale pink provides the decorative background, finely engraved with concentric petal layers. A vertical security thread is embedded in the paper to the left of the central text, and the date “1993” is printed in small numerals near the upper left. The numeral “500” also appears in brown to the far right in vertical orientation alongside fine geometric line patterns. Small additional text references appear in the lower margins, printed in very fine type.

The reverse is executed predominantly in a warm reddish-brown tone and presents a full, finely engraved allegorical female figure whose head and shoulders are wreathed in an elaborate crown of flowers, leaves, wheat ears, and foliage, referencing the pastoral and folkloric themes central to Němcová’s literary work. The figure faces the viewer directly, rendered with exceptional detail in the hair and floral crown through closely spaced intaglio engraving lines. To the upper right of the reverse, the Czech national coat of arms is depicted in a heraldic shield divided into quadrants, showing the Bohemian lion and the Moravian and Silesian eagles, rendered in fine engraved detail in a slightly warmer golden-brown ink. The large numeral “500” appears to the right in bold brown serif type. The serial number “A06 675604” is printed in dark ink to the lower right. Beneath the central figure, the standard anti-counterfeiting legend “PADĚLÁNÍ BANKOVEK SE TRESTÁ PODLE ZÁKONA” — meaning the falsification of banknotes is punishable by law — runs in small spaced capitals across the lower portion of the note. A small circular watermark area is visible to the right of the central figure, and fine guilloche border patterns frame the entire composition. Printer credits appear in very small type in the lower corners.
