The 2 Deutsche Mark of 1951 was among the first coins of this value issued by the Federal Republic of Germany after the introduction of the Deutsche Mark in 1948. Struck in copper-nickel with a bright silvery finish, it was produced only for the year 1951 before the design was replaced. It circulated across West Germany during the early years of post-war reconstruction. The coin has a reeded edge.

On the obverse, the federal eagle, the Bundesadler, spreads its wings across the field, encircled by the legend “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND”. A mint mark letter appears at the foot, identifying the striking mint.

On the reverse, a large numeral “2” occupies the centre, flanked by ears of wheat, bunches of grapes and vine leaves symbolising agriculture and plenty. The words “DEUTSCHE MARK” run along the lower edge and the date “1951” arches across the top, all within a beaded border.
