The fifty pfennig coin, worth half a Deutsche Mark, was a familiar West German coin. Struck in copper-nickel with a silvery colour, it is a round coin with a reeded edge, in everyday use until the euro replaced the mark in 2002.

On the obverse, the value side, a large numeral “50” sits above the word “PFENNIG”, with the legend “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND” around the rim and a mint mark letter at the foot.

On the reverse is the well-known allegorical scene of a kneeling woman planting an oak seedling, representing post-war reconstruction, with the year shown beneath.
