1,000 Francs Djibouti Franc (Issued 2005)

The 1000 Francs denomination sits at the upper end of the Banque Centrale de Djibouti’s current circulation series, which spans multiple denominations issued under the Republic of Djibouti from 1979 onwards. Across this family of notes, a consistent visual language connects economic activity, cultural identity, and national infrastructure, with each denomination drawing on imagery specific to Djibouti’s landscape and livelihoods. The 1000 Francs note is distinguished by its pairing of a prominent portrait with a vivid scene of traditional salt harvesting, setting it apart from lower denominations in the series. Issued in 2005, this note carries the full institutional title of the Banque Centrale de Djibouti and reflects the modernised security and design standards introduced at that time.

On the front, the note is dominated by a warm salmon and rose-pink ground overlaid with fine guilloché patterning that fills the background in repeating, interlocking geometric rosettes. To the right of centre, a large, finely engraved portrait rendered in deep reddish-brown tones depicts Hassan Gouled Aptidon, the founding President of Djibouti, shown wearing glasses and a traditional embroidered kufi cap, his expression composed and authoritative. His name appears in small printed text alongside the portrait. To the left, a detailed central vignette illustrates workers engaged in salt extraction, with several figures shown shovelling white salt into large flat containers, a camel visible in the background against a pale, arid landscape rendered in warm ochres and soft browns. The serial number A014767 appears twice — once in the upper left area and once in the lower right — printed in dark red. The denomination is stated prominently as “1000” in bold numerals at both the upper left and upper right corners, while “MILLE FRANCS” is inscribed in capital lettering across the lower central area, accompanied by the Arabic equivalent “ألف فرنك” in large bold script. The header across the top of the note reads “BANQUE CENTRALE DE DJIBOUTI” in clear serif capitals, flanked on both sides by a decorative emblem in deep red. The designation “LE GOUVERNEUR” appears below the central scene with a printed signature and additional text in Arabic. A security thread is embedded vertically within the paper, visible as a dark line running through the note.

The reverse continues the warm pink and salmon palette, with the upper left carrying the Arabic title “البنك المركزي الجيبوتي” in bold dark lettering and the numeral “1000” displayed in the upper right corner. The central and left portions of the reverse are occupied by a large, detailed illustration of the Port of Djibouti, rendered in vivid blue and red tones against the warm background. Two tall blue container cranes dominate the composition, positioned over a large cargo vessel loaded with colourful shipping containers depicted in blues, reds, and yellows. The port’s infrastructure — quays, loading facilities, and surrounding waterways — is rendered with considerable topographic detail, giving the scene an almost aerial quality. The year “2005” is printed in small numerals to the right of the central vignette. Across the lower section of the note, “MILLE FRANCS” appears again in capital lettering, and below this a bold-framed warning panel in French states that counterfeiting is punishable by twenty years’ criminal imprisonment and a fine of 50,000,000 FDJ. The numeral “1000” is repeated in large bold print in the lower right corner, and fine guilloché border patterns run along the upper and lower edges of the note.
