2½ Gulden Silver Coin (1870)

The two-and-a-half gulden, or rijksdaalder, was the heaviest silver coin in ordinary Dutch use in the nineteenth century, valued for its weight and silver content. Struck in silver on a wide, thick flan, it served larger transactions and savings in an economy where big sums still moved in precious metal. It feels solid and dense in the hand, carries a milled edge, and its deep relief was cut to survive long circulation.

On the obverse, the coin shows the bare-headed, bearded bust of King Willem III facing right, his hair worn full and wavy. The legend reads “WILLEM III KONING DER NED. G.H.V.”, giving his titles as King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg, with the engraver’s mark “J.P. SCHOUBERG F.” beneath the neck. A ring of beads borders the design.

On the reverse, a crowned shield holds the rampant Netherlands lion grasping a sword and a sheaf of arrows, with the denomination shown as “2½” to the left and “G” to the right. The encircling inscription reads “MUNT VAN HET KONINGRYK DER NEDERLANDEN” with the year “1870” above, marking it as coinage of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
