2½ Gulden Silver Coin (Willem III, 1870)

The two-and-a-half gulden, or rijksdaalder, was the largest silver denomination in everyday Dutch circulation during the nineteenth century, prized for its heft and high silver content. Struck in silver on a broad, heavy flan, it was a substantial trade and savings coin at a time when large purchases still passed in precious metal. The piece has a solid, weighty feel and a milled edge, and its bold relief was designed to wear slowly through years of handling.

On the obverse, the coin carries the bare-headed bust of King Willem III facing right, bearded and with wavy hair. The surrounding legend reads “WILLEM III KONING DER NED. G.H.V.”, naming him King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg, with the engraver’s signature “J.P. SCHOUBERG F.” below the truncation of the neck. A beaded border runs inside the raised rim.

On the reverse, a crowned shield bears the rampant Netherlands lion holding a sword and a bundle of arrows, framed at the sides by the value “2½” and “G”. The legend around the edge reads “MUNT VAN HET KONINGRYK DER NEDERLANDEN” with the date “1870” at the top, identifying it as coinage of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. A beaded circle encloses the arms.
