25 Dutch Cents (Queen Juliana, Issued 1977)

The 25-cent piece was one of the everyday minor coins of the Netherlands under the guilder system, worth a quarter of a guilder and used constantly for small purchases before the euro replaced Dutch coinage in 2002. Struck in nickel, it has a bright silvery-white colour, a small, light flan and a smooth, plain edge that set it apart from the copper-toned lower denominations. Its modest size made it a familiar coin in Dutch pockets and tills throughout the post-war decades.

On the obverse, the coin carries the right-facing portrait of Queen Juliana, her hair drawn back and shown in a plain, uncrowned bust. The surrounding legend reads “JULIANA KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN” — Juliana, Queen of the Netherlands — following the rim of the coin.

On the reverse, a large numeral “25” fills the centre beneath a royal crown, with the date split as “19” and “77” on either side and the word “CENT” below. Small mint marks, including the caduceus of the Utrecht mint and the mintmaster’s privy mark, sit at the foot of the design.
