The East Caribbean one dollar is the highest circulating coin denomination of the currency shared across the member states of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union. This aluminium-bronze issue has a warm golden colour and a distinctive ten-sided (decagonal) shape that makes it easy to pick out by touch. Its bold, chunky form and the security offered by its unusual outline suited it to heavy everyday handling.

On the obverse, the coin carries a crowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing an ornate tiara, with the legend “QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND” following the outer edge. A raised rim traces the ten-sided outline.

On the reverse appears Sir Francis Drake’s galleon the Golden Hind under full sail on a stylised sea, a long-standing British Caribbean motif. The inscription “EAST CARIBBEAN STATES” arcs above with the year to the right, the value “1” is repeated on either side of the ship, and “ONE DOLLAR” runs along the foot.
