1 Dollar Dollar (Issued 1985-1988)

In the Eastern Caribbean States during the mid-1980s, a one-dollar note was a working denomination that circulated daily through markets, small shops, and bus fares across the island territories served by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. For ordinary people in Anguilla, Antigua, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St Kitts, St Lucia, and St Vincent, this note represented modest but meaningful purchasing power — enough for a basic meal, a short journey, or everyday goods. The 1985–1988 issue is distinguished by the absence of Anguilla’s name on the map printed on the reverse, making it an identifiable transitional printing within the series. This withdrawn note now surfaces in the UK through returned travellers, inherited collections, and cleared currency holdings.

On the front, the note is dominated by a rich coral-red and rose colouring that saturates the border framework and background patterning across the entire face. The issuing authority’s name — “EASTERN CARIBBEAN CENTRAL BANK” — is printed in bold, prominent lettering across the upper portion of the note, immediately establishing the monetary authority. The denomination “$1” appears in the upper left and upper right corners, rendered clearly against the decorative border. A central scenic vignette depicts a lush tropical coastal landscape: a tall, gracefully leaning palm tree occupies the centre foreground, its fronds sweeping to the right, while rolling green hillsides descend toward a calm turquoise bay. Small sailing vessels are visible on the water in the middle distance, and modest buildings can be discerned nestled along the shoreline at the base of the hills. The scene conveys the natural beauty characteristic of the Eastern Caribbean islands. Decorative floral motifs, suggestive of tropical blooms, frame the left side of the note, adding organic detail to the geometric border work. Fine guilloché patterning fills the background in softer tones, providing a security underprint beneath the main imagery. The words “ONE DOLLAR” are printed in a bold serif typeface along the lower portion of the note within a banner-style panel. A serial number is visible in the upper right area of the note, printed in green ink. The overall engraving combines fine intaglio line work in the central vignette with flatter lithographic colour in the background fields, giving the note its layered visual depth.

The reverse of this note, as seen in the image provided, is in fact the face as described above — the image shown represents the primary design side of the one-dollar note. The composition, with its dominant red tones, tropical coastal scene, palm tree vignette, Eastern Caribbean Central Bank title, and denomination text, constitutes the main printed face of this issue. The paper itself carries a light, cream-toned substrate visible in the unprinted margins, and faint show-through from the security thread can be perceived when examined closely. The border decoration is symmetrical, with repeating geometric and floral elements creating a frame that reinforces the note’s visual integrity and serves as a deterrent to counterfeiting through the complexity of its fine-line reproduction.
