10 Dollars Dollar (Issued 2003)

In the Eastern Caribbean during the early 2000s, a ten-dollar note represented a meaningful sum for everyday transactions — enough to cover a modest meal, a short taxi journey, or a portion of household groceries across the eight member territories of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union. The note circulated widely among workers, traders, and travellers moving between islands such as St Lucia, Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda, and St Vincent and the Grenadines. Issued by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank in 2003, this edition introduced a silver foil security feature as part of ongoing efforts to modernise the currency and deter counterfeiting. Its familiar teal and blue palette made it instantly recognisable throughout the region.

On the front, the design is dominated by a detailed vignette of a coastal harbour scene in the lower left, depicting Admiralty Bay, St Vincent and the Grenadines, rendered in soft greens, blues, and earthy tones that evoke the lush tropical landscape and calm Caribbean waters. A map of the Eastern Caribbean island chain occupies the central portion of the note, with the names of member territories — Anguilla, St Christopher and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, Dominica, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada — clearly printed alongside their respective positions. To the right of centre, a finely engraved illustration of a traditional sailing schooner, identified by the caption as the Warspite of Anguilla, is shown under full sail in crisp blue line work, with a large bird — appearing to be a pelican in flight — arcing above the vessel. The denomination “$10” appears in the upper left and upper right corners, and again in large bold numerals centrally beneath the map, with the words “TEN” and “DOLLARS” printed in a dark horizontal band along the lower edge. The issuing authority’s name, “EASTERN CARIBBEAN CENTRAL BANK,” runs in prominent capital letters across the lower section of the note. A decorative vertical border of guilloché patterning in deep red and blue runs along the upper edge, and a repeating microprint band in blue sits at the very top. Fine geometric and guilloché background patterns in pale teal and cream fill the field, giving the note depth and complexity. A serial number and small printed signatures of bank officials are present in the lower left region, and a security thread is embedded vertically through the paper. The silver foil element — the identifying feature of this 2003 issue — is incorporated as a reflective patch, adding a tactile and visually distinct security layer.

The reverse of the note continues the teal and pale blue colour scheme, with intricate guilloché patterning forming the background across the entire field. A central vignette features the Government House or an administrative building set within landscaped grounds, rendered in detailed intaglio line engraving. Surrounding decorative elements include floral and geometric motifs consistent with the fine printing standards of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank series. The denomination “$10” is repeated in the upper corners on the reverse, and the paper itself carries the characteristic feel of a cotton-fibre security note, with subtle watermark features visible when the note is held to the light.
