100 Dollars Dollar (Issued 2008)
The 100 Dollar denomination sits at the apex of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank’s banknote series, sharing the same overarching design language as the lower denominations issued contemporaneously — each note featuring Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and regional imagery on the reverse, yet differentiated by their own distinctive colour palette and denomination-specific vignettes. The 2008 issue is distinguished by the removal of suffix letters that previously identified individual member states, making each note universally valid across the entire Eastern Caribbean Currency Union without geographic qualification. At the highest face value in the series, the 100 Dollar note carries the most elaborate engraving work and the most prominent security features of the family. It is a note that reflects the collective identity of the eight member territories it serves.
On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Queen Elizabeth II positioned to the right of centre, rendered in crisp intaglio detail with subtle tonal gradation across her face and hair. She is depicted in a mature likeness, wearing a pearl necklace and pearl drop earrings, with a composed and dignified expression. The overall colour scheme of the front is a warm combination of green, teal, and orange tones, with the central field lighter in tone to allow the large bold text “ONE HUNDRED” to stand prominently in red across the middle of the note, accompanied by the words “DOLLARS” beneath. To the upper left, the issuing authority is stated clearly as “EASTERN CARIBBEAN” along the top edge and “CENTRAL BANK” in a horizontal band rendered in teal, forming a structured header across the width of the note. The legal tender declaration reads “THESE NOTES ARE LEGAL TENDER FOR THE PAYMENT OF ANY AMOUNT” in small but legible text to the left of centre. The serial number VA167005 appears twice — vertically along the left margin and horizontally to the right of the portrait — printed in red. A governor’s signature, attributed to K. Dwight Venner, appears beneath a printed title “GOVERNOR” on the lower left. To the right of the portrait sits a circular security feature incorporating the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank emblem with the denomination “$100 ECCB” repeated around its border. A building vignette, likely representing a government or banking structure, is partially visible to the upper left of centre, rendered in muted blue-grey tones. Marine life, including a sea turtle and tropical fish rendered in orange and teal, decorates the lower left corner, reinforcing the Caribbean natural environment theme. The background is enriched with fine guilloché patterns and geometric latticework in layered teal and green tones, providing depth to the design while serving as a counterfeit deterrent.
The reverse is dominated by a large engraved portrait on the left side, identified by the caption “Sir Arthur Lewis” — Sir W. Arthur Lewis, the Nobel Prize-winning economist born in Saint Lucia and the only Caribbean-born person to receive the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. His portrait is rendered in strong monochromatic engraving, showing him wearing glasses, a suit, and tie, with a serious and composed expression. To the right of his portrait, a detailed map of the Eastern Caribbean island chain is depicted, with individual islands labelled in small text including Anguilla, St. Christopher and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada — providing a geographic overview of the entire Currency Union membership. A stylised bird in flight is visible over the map. To the right of centre, a vignette of the ECCB Central Bank Building is depicted, captioned “ECCB CENTRAL BANK BUILDING”, showing a low-rise modern structure with palm trees and coastal surroundings, rendered in green and teal tones. The denomination “$100” appears in the upper left and upper right corners of the reverse, with “ONE HUNDRED” stated in bold text on the lower left alongside “DOLLARS” below it. The issuing authority “EASTERN CARIBBEAN CENTRAL BANK” is printed in large text across the lower right portion of the reverse. A decorative orange and teal marine creature motif is visible at the far right edge, consistent with the Caribbean wildlife theme used throughout the series. The overall colour scheme of the reverse transitions through greens, teals, and warm browns, with fine background guilloche patterns providing texture across the entire field.
