5 Dollars Dollar (Issued 2021)
Printed on polymer substrate, the 2021 Eastern Caribbean Central Bank five-dollar note incorporates a transparent window element visible near the upper portion of the note, a hallmark of the modern polymer series that significantly raises the barrier against counterfeiting. The iridescent security thread is embedded within the polymer layer and produces colour-shifting effects under different angles of light. Micro-printed text repeating the denomination and issuing authority appears within the guilloché banding, ensuring that photocopied reproductions cannot replicate the fine-line detail. These combined security measures represented a meaningful upgrade over the earlier paper issues of the Eastern Caribbean dollar.
On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, positioned to the right of centre and rendered with considerable depth and tonal precision, showing Her Majesty wearing a diamond tiara and pearl necklace against a predominantly green and teal background. The issuing authority name, “Eastern Caribbean Central Bank,” is printed in clear serif typography across the upper portion of the note, with the large stylised numeral “5” appearing in the upper left corner in a contrasting colour. A vivid depiction of a hummingbird in full flight is positioned in the lower central area of the obverse, its iridescent green and teal plumage rendered in crisp detail against lighter background tones. A horizontal band of guilloché patterning, incorporating repeating micro-text reading “ECCB 5,” runs across the lower mid-section of the note, transitioning from deep teal into lighter green. The serial number CU081712 appears on the left side in dark ink, and the Governor’s signature is printed in the lower left quadrant above the machine-readable serial numerals. The legal tender text, “THESE NOTES ARE LEGAL TENDER FOR THE PAYMENT OF ANY AMOUNT,” appears in small black capitals across the centre, and the denomination text “Five Dollars” is clearly printed at the foot of the note alongside a bold “$5” symbol rendered in a slightly raised green ink.
The reverse presents a rich composition celebrating the geography and heritage of the Eastern Caribbean member states. Trafalgar Falls in Dominica occupies the upper left portion of the reverse, depicted in fine engraved detail showing cascading water between lush forested rock faces, with the text “Trafalgar Falls, Dominica” printed alongside. A detailed map of the Eastern Caribbean island chain fills the central-upper area, with individual islands labelled in small text including Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, St Christopher and Nevis, Montserrat, Dominica, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada, all set against a light green field. In the lower section, a rendered image of Admirals House in Antigua and Barbuda is depicted as a colonial-era structure with a wide verandah, accompanied by the text “Admirals House, Antigua & Barbuda.” The denomination text “Five Dollars” and the “$5” symbol repeat in the lower corners, maintaining typographic consistency with the obverse. The overall colour palette of the reverse remains within a range of greens and teals, consistent with the note’s dominant hue, with subtle variation providing depth across the different vignette panels. A pink and white geometric element, consistent with the polymer window strip, is visible in the central-right area of the reverse.
