50 Dollars Dollar (Issued 2019)
A fifty-dollar Eastern Caribbean note might have passed through the hands of a market trader in Basseterre, a fisherman collecting his weekly earnings in Roseau, or a tourist paying for a beachside meal across any one of the eight island nations that share this currency. Circulating across Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, and St Vincent and the Grenadines, this polymer note represents a significant step up in denomination for daily transactions. Printed on polymer substrate as part of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank’s 2019–2021 New Design Issue, it carries the most sophisticated security technology the region has adopted to date. Notes of this value would typically move through bank tellers, hotel cashiers, and government payment windows before eventually being returned to the banking system.
On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, rendered in detailed intaglio-style printing and positioned centrally against a warm golden-amber background. The Queen is depicted wearing a tiara and a pearl necklace, her expression composed and dignified, with the portrait enclosed within a lighter oval field that contrasts against the surrounding guilloché patterning. The issuing authority name, “Eastern Caribbean Central Bank,” is printed in clear serif typography across the upper right portion of the note. The large numeral “50” appears prominently in the upper left corner, rendered in deep amber tones, and is repeated in bold copper-orange at the lower right as “$50” alongside the words “Fifty Dollars” in confident sans-serif lettering. A serial number, SX059592, is printed vertically in magenta along the left-hand side. A horizontal security window runs across the lower mid-section of the note, within which a sophisticated optically variable device is embedded — this features a hummingbird and what appears to be a dark bird motif visible in teal and gold tones depending on the viewing angle, with the denomination “50” also incorporated into the device. The text “THESE NOTES ARE LEGAL TENDER FOR THE PAYMENT OF ANY AMOUNT” appears in small print beneath the portrait. Below the security window, the Governor’s signature appears alongside micro-text repeating “ECCB 50,” and the lower section carries bold denomination text and a dollar sign rendered in warm amber. The lower left section features a stylised geometric band of interlocking pink and red patterns, adding both visual security and decorative distinction to the design.
The reverse presents a rich composition dominated by a warm amber and golden-brown colour palette across the polymer surface. The most prominent feature is a large portrait of Sir K. Dwight Venner, the distinguished Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank who served from 1989 until his death in 2015, depicted from approximately mid-chest upward, smiling warmly and wearing glasses, his name printed clearly beneath the image in serif text. To the upper left, a detailed engraving of Brimstone Hill Fortress on St Kitts is labelled with the text “Brimstone Hill, St Kitts,” its stone walls and historic architecture rendered in brown tones. A map of the Eastern Caribbean occupies the upper right area, clearly labelling all member states including Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, St Christopher and Nevis, Dominica, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada, each island shown in outline form against the background. The “Eastern Caribbean Central Bank” name and the “$50” denomination appear at the top of the reverse, with “Fifty Dollars” and “$50” repeated in the lower left. A second optically variable security window runs horizontally across the lower portion of the reverse, mirroring the front but showing the hummingbird and bird motifs from the opposite side with the denomination “50” visible in shifting tones. Micro-text reading “ECCB 50” repeats in a band both above and below this security element. The lower section of the reverse features a finely detailed architectural engraving of a building facade rendered in warm amber line work, adding further visual texture and complexity to the note’s overall design.
