1 Egyptian Pound EGY Banknote (Kingdom / Early Republic) 1961-1967

1 Egyptian Pound Egyptian Pound (Issued 1961-1967)

A cool palette of soft blue-grey and muted violet dominates this one pound note, with delicate pink and lilac tones emerging from the central guilloché field and the ornate Arabic script panel. The restrained use of purple for key text and numerals against the pale ground was a deliberate security and aesthetic choice of mid-twentieth century central bank printing, making counterfeiting more difficult whilst projecting institutional authority. Subtle teal and grey-green tones frame the borders, reinforcing the formal, official character of Egypt’s newly reorganised central banking system during the early republic period.

On the front, the right-hand side of the note features an engraved portrait of the Great Sphinx of Giza, rendered in a rich purple-brown intaglio that gives the image considerable sculptural depth and definition. The Sphinx faces left in three-quarter profile, its headdress and facial features sharply delineated through fine-line engraving typical of the printing standards of the era. The issuing authority is identified in prominent Arabic calligraphy along the top of the note reading البنك المركزي المصري, identifying this as a Central Bank of Egypt issue. Centred on the face is an elaborate guilloché rosette in pale pink and lilac, surrounded by intricate lathe-work patterns that radiate outward in concentric geometric formations. Within this central panel, the denomination is stated in Arabic script as جنيه مصري واحد, meaning One Egyptian Pound. The serial number 483311 with the prefix fraction 79 appears twice at the lower left and lower right of the note in dark violet ink, and is also repeated in smaller form directly above the central panel. The date printed on the note reads Cairo 1966, with additional Arabic text beneath referencing the issuing authority and carrying what appears to be a printed signature alongside the title حافظ البنك, meaning Bank Governor. Flanking pillar motifs and a repeating floral border in blue-grey guilloché line work run along all four edges, with small ornamental floral devices at each corner reinforcing the symmetrical formal design.

The reverse is printed entirely in dark blue-grey and black ink on a pale ground, giving it a strikingly monochromatic and architectural quality. The words CENTRAL BANK OF EGYPT are printed in bold serif capital letters across the top of the note in English. Dominating the centre of the reverse is a large bold denomination statement, L E 1, rendered in heavy letterpress-style typography set within a finely engraved rectangular frame of interlocking geometric and floral guilloché work. To the left of this central cartouche sits a large circular guilloché rosette of exceptional intricacy, built from concentric spiral lathe-work that creates an optical depth effect characteristic of high-security intaglio printing. Flanking the central denomination panel on both sides are tall column or pillar devices with ornate foliate capitals, echoing classical Egyptian architectural motifs. Small floral ornaments are repeated at intervals along the upper and lower borders. Beneath the central panel, the denomination is spelled out in full in English as ONE EGYPTIAN POUND within a rectangular label. The numeral 1 appears in each lower corner, framed by further geometric border panels. The overall reverse design is a masterwork of security printing geometry, relying entirely on pattern density and tonal contrast rather than colour to assert the note’s authenticity and denomination.
