10 Pounds Egyptian Pound (Issued 2013-2025)

The Sultan Hassan Mosque, one of the most celebrated examples of Mamluk architecture in Cairo, dominates the central vignette of this Egyptian ten-pound banknote. Completed in 1363 and positioned at the foot of the Citadel in the historic heart of the city, the mosque has long served as a symbol of Egypt’s rich Islamic heritage and its centuries-old tradition of monumental religious construction. Its selection for the ten-pound denomination reflects the Central Bank of Egypt’s sustained commitment to honouring the country’s architectural legacy on its circulating currency. The structure’s soaring minarets and ornate façade render it immediately recognisable to Egyptians and to visitors familiar with Cairo’s skyline.

On the front, the engraved illustration of the Sultan Hassan Mosque is rendered in precise intaglio detail, capturing the layered stonework, the arched entrance portal, and the twin minarets that rise above the main body of the building. The overall colour palette of the front face is soft and layered, combining pastel lilac, pale blue, and light green tones across the background field, which is filled with intricate guilloché rosette patterns and fine geometric latticework. To the upper right, the numeral “10” appears in a decorative red and gold panel, accompanied by the Arabic denomination text “عشرة جنيهات” — meaning ten pounds — printed in bold Arabic script in the central right area of the note. The issuing authority is identified in Arabic as “البنك المركزي المصري” (the Central Bank of Egypt), printed prominently to the right of the mosque vignette. A signature line appears beneath the bank’s name, attributed to the Governor, with the Arabic title “المحافظ” visible. The serial number “٣٧١/٥٢٦٥١٦١” appears twice — once in the upper left corner and once along the lower right — printed in reddish-brown ink in a distinctive Arabic-numeral format. A date reading “٢٠١٤/٨/١٨” is also visible in the upper left region of the note. On the left edge, a large oval electrotype watermark area in pale blue and teal provides an additional security element, and a vertical security thread is embedded within the paper, visible as a dark line running through the left-centre portion of the note.

The reverse is dominated by a large, boldly rendered engraving of the Great Sphinx of Giza, depicted in profile facing right and occupying most of the left and central portion of the design. The Sphinx is shown with considerable sculptural detail — the headdress striations, the eroded facial features, and the characteristic nemes cloth falling at the sides of the face are all clearly delineated. A falcon figure, representing Horus, is visible perched behind the Sphinx’s head, adding further depth to the ancient Egyptian iconography. The background of the reverse is rendered in warm rose and soft lilac tones, overlaid with fine swirling guilloché patterns and a large, pale watercolour-style numeral “10” occupying the right-centre of the composition. In the upper centre, the text “CENTRAL BANK OF EGYPT” is printed in clean serif capitals in dark ink, establishing the issuing authority in English. The numeral “10” also appears twice in smaller form — in the upper left and lower left corners — printed in deep red against the patterned background. Along the bottom edge, the words “TEN POUNDS” are printed in bold, spaced serif capitals in dark reddish-brown ink. A circular dotted security feature is visible to the right of centre on the reverse, consistent with latent image or EURion constellation security printing used on modern Egyptian banknotes.
