25 Piastres Egyptian Pound (Issued 1961-1966)

Withdrawn from circulation following the consolidation of Egypt’s banking and monetary system in the mid-1960s, this 25 Piastres note was issued during a transitional period in which the newly established Central Bank of Egypt assumed control of currency issuance from the National Bank of Egypt. The note reflects the early years of the Egyptian Republic under Gamal Abdel Nasser, when national symbolism was being actively incorporated into official state imagery. It was superseded as Egypt modernised its currency programme and introduced updated series bearing revised designs and enhanced security features.

On the front, the note is printed predominantly in shades of violet and blue-grey, with the Arabic inscription “البنك المركزي المصري” — the Central Bank of Egypt — running across the upper banner in bold, stylised calligraphic lettering. The denomination “25” appears in the upper left and lower right corners in both Arabic-Eastern and Western numerals, with the value written out in Arabic script across the centre of the note. A prominent guilloché rosette pattern occupies the central left portion of the face, rendered in fine lathe-work engraving with layered geometric and floral interlace. To the right, within an arched cartouche framed by decorative column-like borders, sits the Eagle of Saladin — the national emblem of Egypt — depicted as a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, facing to the right, with a shield on its chest bearing horizontal stripes and two stars beneath, rendered in detailed intaglio engraving. A serial number, 465239 with the fraction 1/5, appears twice — once in the upper left area and once in the lower right — printed in black ink. Arabic text below the central rosette includes the date of issue, referencing Cairo (القاهرة) and the year 1961, along with authorising signatures of the issuing officials. The border of the note is formed by a repeating geometric frame with interlocking angular patterns consistent with Islamic decorative tradition.

The reverse is printed in the same deep violet and blue tones and presents a clean, boldly typographic design. The inscription “CENTRAL BANK OF EGYPT” runs across the top within a ruled banner, flanked on either side by symmetric ornamental panels of fine guilloché scrollwork. At the centre, an elaborate oval medallion of densely engraved lathe-work surrounds the denomination text “TWENTY FIVE PIASTRES”, printed in three stacked lines of bold serif capitals within a rectangular cartouche set within the medallion. The numeral “25” appears in large format to both the left and right of the central medallion, each set within its own decorative rounded lozenge of guilloché engraving. The lower portion of the reverse features mirrored floral scroll motifs anchoring each corner, and the overall composition is framed by a repeating ornamental border consistent with the front face.
