10 Pounds FLK Banknote (2005–2011 Issue) 2011
£8.585000

10 Pounds Pound (Issued 2011)
Christ Church Cathedral in Stanley, the southernmost Anglican cathedral in the world, anchors the reverse of this ten pound note, appearing alongside a residential building flying the Union Flag and a further domestic structure set amid green grounds. These three scenes together capture the settled, distinctly British character of Stanley, the Falkland Islands’ capital, and reflect the islands’ enduring cultural and constitutional ties to the United Kingdom. The choice of Stanley’s built environment for the ten pound denomination underscores the significance of the capital as the administrative and social heart of this South Atlantic territory. Issued on 1 January 2011 under the authority of the Government of the Falkland Islands, this note forms part of the 2005–2011 series.
On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Queen Elizabeth II positioned to the right of centre, depicted in a mature likeness with her characteristic pearl necklace and earrings, her hair styled upswept. The portrait is rendered with considerable tonal depth, the engraving capturing fine detail in the facial features and jewellery. Flanking the portrait to its right is a smaller inset vignette showing a bird of prey — identifiable as an upland goose or similar Falklands species — perched against a lightly detailed background. To the left of the central denomination text, a scene depicts a group of penguins standing on rocky ground with a seal or sea lion resting nearby, referencing the iconic wildlife of the South Atlantic. The Falkland Islands coat of arms appears in an oval cartouche in the lower left area, rendered in fine line engraving. The issuing authority is stated prominently at the top in bold serif lettering reading “THE GOVERNMENT OF THE FALKLAND ISLANDS”, and the denomination is displayed both as “TEN POUNDS” in large central lettering and as “£10” in the lower left corner. The note carries the text “THESE NOTES ARE LEGAL TENDER FOR THE PAYMENT OF ANY AMOUNT FOR THE GOVERNMENT OF THE FALKLAND ISLANDS” in a central column. A printed date of “1 JANUARY 2011” appears below the serial number “B000525”, which is printed in green and repeated in the lower right. Two facsimile signatures appear above the designation “Commissioners of Currency”. The overall colour palette of the front is a subdued green-grey with fine guilloché patterning forming decorative borders and circular rosettes at each corner of the note.
The reverse presents three oval vignette scenes arranged in a horizontal band across the centre of the note, all printed in a green and purple-grey colour scheme. The leftmost oval depicts a low stone or painted building with a Union Flag flying from a flagpole, surrounded by garden planting, suggestive of a government or official residence in Stanley. The central oval, slightly larger, shows a more expansive view of a long, gabled building set in open green grounds with mature trees, conveying the pastoral quality of the Falklands capital. The rightmost oval presents Christ Church Cathedral with its distinctive square tower and the famous whalebone arch visible in the foreground — a landmark unique to Stanley and recognised worldwide as a symbol of the Falkland Islands. Above all three scenes, the inscription “THE GOVERNMENT OF THE FALKLAND ISLANDS” is printed in dark lettering across the full width of the note. The border of the reverse is composed of intricate guilloché wave patterns in green and purple tones, providing both decorative structure and security patterning. A small diamond registration device is visible near the top centre of the note.
