20 Pounds Pound (Issued 2011)
Modern banknote production has moved decisively towards polymer substrates, holographic foil patches, and digitally printed microprinting that would have been prohibitively complex when this 2011 Falkland Islands twenty pound note was prepared for circulation. Yet the principles that govern this note — a commanding royal portrait, rich intaglio engraving, and a composition that balances symbolic imagery with anti-counterfeiting rigour — remain the foundational grammar of well-designed currency the world over. The guilloché tradition, the careful hierarchy of denomination text, and the integration of native wildlife into a distinctly territorial identity are approaches that contemporary designers continue to draw upon. What distinguishes this note is the clarity with which those enduring principles are expressed within a compact island currency of considerable visual authority.
On the front, the dominant feature is an engraved portrait of Queen Elizabeth II positioned to the right of centre, rendered with fine intaglio line work that conveys depth and texture in her hair, jewellery, and clothing. The Queen is depicted in mature years, wearing a pearl necklace and dressed formally, her expression composed and dignified. The overall colour palette of the front face is warm olive-green and pale ochre, with tonal variation achieved through the varying density of engraved line work rather than flat printed colour. To the upper left, a group of king penguins is depicted in careful detail, their characteristic black, white, and yellow-orange colouring rendered in restrained printwork against a subtle background. To the right of the portrait, a further native animal — appearing to be a bird of the Falkland Islands — is visible, adding to the territorial character of the design. The central denomination text reads “TWENTY POUNDS” in bold serif lettering, with “£20” appearing prominently in the lower left corner and again as a numeral in the upper right. The issuing authority is stated clearly as “THE GOVERNMENT OF THE FALKLAND ISLANDS” across the top of the note in capitalised serif type. A legal tender notice reads “THESE NOTES ARE LEGAL TENDER FOR THE PAYMENT OF ANY AMOUNT FOR THE GOVERNMENT OF THE FALKLAND ISLANDS”, printed in smaller text across the upper central area. The date “1 JANUARY 2011” is printed beneath the denomination text, confirming this as the final date of issue within the 2005–2011 series. Below centre, the Falkland Islands coat of arms appears as a circular vignette, featuring a sailing ship above a shield design, with the motto rendered beneath. A facsimile signature of the Commissioners of Currency is printed below the coat of arms, with the designation “Commissioners of Currency” stated in italic script. The serial number “B000288” appears twice — once in the upper left area and once along the lower right — printed in dark ink against the note’s ground colour. Guilloché patterning forms a decorative border running across the lower portion of the note, creating a wave-like geometric band that adds both visual structure and security. A watermark area to the left of the portrait provides an additional layer of authentication visible when the note is held to light.
The reverse presents a calm, predominantly olive-green and muted purple composition dominated by three architectural vignettes depicting landmark buildings of the Falkland Islands. To the left, a red-brick colonial-style building is shown flying a Union Jack flag from a pole, with a verandah visible along its façade and a low fence in the foreground — consistent with Government House in Stanley. The central oval vignette, the largest of the three, depicts a low white-painted settlement building with a corrugated roof set against open grassland and trees, evoking the pastoral character of the Falkland Islands interior. To the right, a stone church with a distinctive square tower is shown, with what appears to be a pair of whale jawbones forming an arch in the foreground — a feature characteristic of Christ Church Cathedral in Stanley. Above all three vignettes, the text “THE GOVERNMENT OF THE FALKLAND ISLANDS” is printed in bold dark lettering across the full width of the note, providing a clear issuing authority statement on the reverse as well. A small diamond-shaped security feature is visible in the upper right area of the reverse. The upper and lower borders of the reverse carry guilloché band patterning in deeper purple tones, echoing the security decoration visible on the front face and lending the note a consistent, well-composed visual frame.
