20 Pounds Pound (Issued 2025)
The Government of the Falkland Islands has issued its own currency since 1899, operating as the sovereign monetary authority for this British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic. The Commissioners of Currency, acting on behalf of the Government of the Falkland Islands, are responsible for producing and authorising all banknotes in circulation across the islands. The 2025 series marks a historically significant transition in the iconography of Falkland Islands currency, replacing the portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II with that of her successor. This issue, dated 14 August 2025, represents the first Charles III series for the territory and carries forward the tradition of showcasing the natural heritage and landscapes unique to the islands.
On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of King Charles III positioned to the right of centre, rendered in warm brown and mauve intaglio tones with careful attention to facial detail, including the King’s characteristic features — his expression composed and dignified, his collar and jacket visible in the lower portion of the portrait. To the left of centre, the large numeral “20” is printed in a deep brown guilloché-style format, with a soaring bird — likely an albatross — depicted in flight above and to the left of the denomination figure, rendered with fine line engraving that captures the span of the wings against a lightly detailed coastal landscape. The landscape beneath the “20” shows an aerial or panoramic view of what appears to be Falkland Islands coastline and terrain, etched in delicate brown tones. At the lower left, text reads “THESE NOTES ARE LEGAL TENDER FOR THE PAYMENT OF ANY AMOUNT” followed by the date “14 AUGUST 2025”, and below that appear the signatures of the Commissioners of Currency. A further line of text reads “FIRST RECORDED SIGHTINGS OF THE FALKLAND ISLANDS FROM THE EXPEDITION OF MAGELLAN, 14 AUGUST 1520”, connecting the legal tender date to a moment of historical significance in the islands’ discovery. The issuing authority name, “THE GOVERNMENT OF THE FALKLAND ISLANDS”, is printed in bold serif capitals across the lower portion of the note in a rich brown tone. To the lower right, the Falkland Islands coat of arms is visible in a small vignette. The right-hand edge features a vertical band of bright gold and yellow geometric design elements, adding a contrasting metallic accent to the otherwise warm brown palette of the obverse. The overall colour scheme transitions from deep brown at the portrait side to lighter warm tones across the central landscape, with cream and off-white background paper visible beneath the intricate guilloché work.
The reverse presents a richly detailed composition dominated by large botanical artwork in the left and centre portions of the note, depicting white flowers with broad, detailed petals — likely a Falkland Islands native species — rendered in fine pale line engraving against a light background. Behind and to the right of the floral design, a scenic landscape view of what is captioned as Steeple Jason Island is depicted in warm green, amber, and earthy tones, showing mountainous terrain rising above a coastal plain with water visible in the middle distance, conveying the remote and dramatic scenery of the outer islands. In the lower left corner, small but clearly detailed illustrations of Falkland Islands penguins appear in two groups — one group showing three penguins in yellowish-orange and white colouring, and another smaller cluster nearby, adding a characteristic emblem of the islands’ wildlife to the composition. The large numeral “20” appears to the lower right in pale grey guilloché, subtly integrated into the background design. The text “THE GOVERNMENT OF THE FALKLAND ISLANDS” is printed in bold dark lettering across the lower right quadrant of the reverse, maintaining consistency with the obverse typography. A serial number, “A006197”, is printed in dark ink in the upper right corner. The left edge of the reverse shows a clear security window or transparent strip integrated into the note substrate, visible as a vertical band on the left margin. Microprint text runs along the lower edge of the note. The overall colour palette of the reverse moves from pale silver-white at the floral left through green and amber landscape tones to warm brown at the lower right, giving the note a naturalistic and cohesive visual identity rooted in the Falkland Islands environment.
