5 Pounds Pound (Issued 2025)
The accession of King Charles III to the British throne in September 2022 marked the beginning of a new royal era for the United Kingdom and its Overseas Territories, including the Falkland Islands. As the Crown’s presence on Falkland Islands banknotes transitioned from Queen Elizabeth II to her successor, the Government of the Falkland Islands commissioned a fresh series of notes bearing the portrait of the new monarch. This 2025-dated five pound note represents one of the earliest circulating polymer issues to feature King Charles III in the South Atlantic territory’s currency programme. The legal tender date printed on the note, 14 August 2025, anchors it precisely within the early years of the new reign.
On the front, the note is dominated by a large, detailed portrait of King Charles III positioned to the right of centre, rendered with fine intaglio-style engraving that captures his facial features with precision, including his characteristically warm complexion and composed expression. The background behind the portrait fades through deep crimson and rose tones into softer pink and cream hues towards the left, where a lightly printed cartographic outline of the Falkland Islands archipelago is visible beneath the design. Above and to the left of the map, two seabirds — likely albatrosses — are depicted in flight against the pale sky-toned background, their wings spread wide and rendered in white and light grey. The large numeral “5” appears in the upper left in bold red, accompanied by the text “FIVE POUNDS” in capital letters running vertically along the left edge. Centrally positioned beneath the map imagery is the legal tender declaration reading “THESE NOTES ARE LEGAL TENDER FOR THE PAYMENT OF ANY AMOUNT” followed by the date “14 AUGUST 2025.” Below this appears a facsimile signature above the title “COMMISSIONERS OF CURRENCY,” and beneath that, a line of smaller text referencing the first recorded sighting of the Falkland Islands. The full issuing authority, “THE GOVERNMENT OF THE FALKLAND ISLANDS,” is printed in bold red lettering across the lower portion of the note. To the lower right, a small shield-shaped Falkland Islands coat of arms is visible. A decorative gold and yellow geometric design element appears at the right edge of the note alongside the portrait, adding warmth and contrast to the predominantly red and pink colour scheme.
The reverse presents a composition centred on the natural environment of the Falkland Islands, with large, softly rendered flower blooms — consistent with the native pale maiden or similar Falkland flora — occupying the left and upper portions of the note in delicate pinks and whites with fine linear engraving detail visible in the petals. To the right of the floral imagery, a landscape scene depicts a broad mountain or hill rising above a coastal inlet, rendered in tones of green, teal, and grey, suggesting the wild, open terrain characteristic of the islands. The lower section of the reverse carries a band in deep pink-red, across which “THE GOVERNMENT OF THE FALKLAND ISLANDS” is printed in bold, with the text “DESIGN THE LINES” in smaller lettering beneath. In the lower left of this band, small printed figures of penguins — rendered in black and yellow — are visible in a group, a reference to the iconic wildlife of the territory. The serial number “A005973” is printed in black in the upper right of the reverse. The numeral “5” appears in red to the right of centre, and the note’s polymer substrate is evident from the overall finish, with a degree of translucency visible at the edges.
