20 Finnish Pennia (Issued 1980)

The 20-pennia coin was a small circulating denomination of Finland under the markka system, worth one-fifth of a markka and used for minor everyday transactions before the euro replaced the markka in 2002. Struck in aluminium-bronze, it has a warm golden colour, a light flan and a plain edge, with a beaded border running just inside the rim on both faces. Its modest size made it a familiar low-value coin in Finnish tills for decades.

On the obverse, the coin shows the heraldic Finnish lion rampant, crowned and brandishing a sword while trampling a sabre, taken from the national coat of arms. The legend “SUOMEN TASAVALTA” — the Republic of Finland — curves around the upper rim, with the date “1980” at the foot and small rosettes to either side.

On the reverse, a large numeral “20” fills the field alongside a stylised plant motif, with the word “PENNIA” inscribed along the lower rim inside the beaded border.
