The 5 penniä was a small coin of the Finnish markka, and this 1942 issue belongs to the wartime series struck in copper. Pierced with a central hole to economise on metal and aid recognition, it has a warm reddish-brown tone and a simple, hard-wearing form. The markka continued as Finland’s currency until the euro replaced it in 2002.

On the obverse, a Finnish heraldic rose is placed at the top above crossed spruce sprigs that arch around the central hole, with the year divided as “19” and “42” below.
