The 1 franc was a core everyday coin of the French franc, the currency in use in France until the euro replaced it in 2002. Struck in nickel with a silvery appearance and a reeded edge, it was a light, hard-wearing piece central to daily transactions. It bore the long-established Sower design that had become an emblem of French coinage.
On the obverse, “La Semeuse”, the Sower by Louis-Oscar Roty, strides forward scattering seed against the sunrise, with “LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ” and “RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE” around the figure.
On the reverse, the numeral “1” and the word “FRANC” are flanked by sprays of olive and oak leaves, with the year at the foot.
