The 2 francs was a mid-value coin of the French franc, the currency France used until the euro replaced it in 2002. Struck in nickel with a bright finish and a reeded edge, it was a solid everyday piece, larger than the 1 franc and carrying the same enduring Sower motif. It served widely in daily commerce.
On the obverse, “La Semeuse”, Roty’s Sower, is shown mid-stride sowing seed towards the rising sun, encircled by “LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ” and the name of the Republic.
On the reverse, the numeral “2” and the word “FRANCS” are set between olive and oak leaf sprays, with the year beneath, framed by a raised rim.
