5 French Centimes (Issued 1966)

The 5-centime coin was a small everyday denomination of the French franc system introduced with the new franc, worth one-twentieth of a franc and used for minor change until the euro replaced the franc in 2002. Struck in aluminium-bronze, it has a warm golden tone, a light flan and a plain edge, and its long production run made it one of the most familiar small coins in French pockets.

On the obverse, the coin carries the head of Marianne, the personification of the French Republic, facing left with flowing hair and wearing a Phrygian cap. The legend “REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE” curves around the rim, and the designer’s name “LAGRIFFOUL” is inscribed in small letters at the shoulder.

On the reverse, designed by Adrien Dieudonné, a large numeral “5” sits between an olive branch and an ear of wheat, above the word “CENTIMES” and the date “1966”. The republican motto “LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE” runs around the upper rim.
