The 5 francs was a substantial everyday coin of the French franc, the currency used in France until the euro replaced it in 2002. Struck in nickel-clad copper-nickel with a silvery look and a reeded edge, it was a solid, higher-value circulating piece. It carried the traditional Sower design shared across the franc coinage.
On the obverse, “La Semeuse”, the Sower by Louis-Oscar Roty, strides forward casting seed against the sunrise, with “LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ” and “RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE” set around her.
On the reverse, the numeral “5” and the word “FRANCS” appear amid olive and oak foliage, with the year at the foot.
